ASPIRE Academy’s 1997 and 2000 teams kicked off the new football season on Thursday as they played against the visiting English Football League Championship counterparts of Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Both Aspire teams played two games each. In their first match, Aspire 2000 performed well against the physically stronger Wolves side; however, a last minute goal saw the home team lose 2-3.

In their second game the Academy pupils played to their full potential and successfully showed off their excellent football skills, which led the team to a 1-0 win.

David Chatwin, Aspire 2000 coach, commented on the games: “Our boys played competitively in both games.

In the first match a late goal saw the team lose (2-3). In the second game, our players dominated the field, successfully executing techniques we had been working on in training, including passing, finishing, defending and effectively maintaining the advantage.

Overall, we are very pleased by their performances.” Aspire 97 dominated both games against their English counterparts technically and tactically, as well as in terms of scoring. The team took home a 3-1 win in the first game and then cemented their position with a 6-4 win in the second match.

Aspire 97 coach Paul Richard Nevin praised the way his players negotiated the two games: “Generally this was a good starting point to the season for the 1997 team.

The performances demonstrated that the players are very competitive.” “It also showed there has been a good transfer of knowledge from the training ground to the competition environment. Another very positive outcome from the game was 1997’s team spirit and sheer determination to win, as in the past they may have conceded more goals and possibly lost the game.” The Wolves head coach, Kevin Thelwell said: “It was a fantastic experience for our young players. We have to thank Aspire Academy and its management for giving us this opportunity to experience a new culture and a different climate, and also for allowing us the use of these great facilities as well as playing their wellorganised teams. I would also like to congratulate the football coaching staff of Aspire for the great work they are doing with their young players.”
