QU-ABA to organise lawyers’ conference

DOHA QATAR University College of Law (QU-LAWC) will hold a conference at Intercontinental Hotel on October 20.

The conference titled, ‘Building a stronger legal profession in Qatar’, will be held in conjunction with the American Bar Association Rule of Law Initiative (ABA-ROLI).

The event will be presided over by Minister of Justice HE Hasan bin Abdullah al Ghanem. The conference will also feature distinguished speakers from Qatar, Morocco and the US. The speakers will share their knowledge on legal profession, ethics codes and lawyer regulation.

Not only lawyers, but also workers in the country’s legal departments will be able to participate in the panel discussions. Recommendations from the panel will call for strategies to enhance development of the legal profession. The recommendations will be then compiled into a report to be issued to the decision-makers.

The morning session will focus on structuring the legal profession and will also discuss preparatory training, bar association models and continuing legal education.

LAWC professor Dr Hassan al Sayed will moderate the panel discussions. The speakers will include MCLE Board Director of the US Supreme Court of Illinois Karen Litscher Johnson, Esq; Rabat Young Lawyers Association Secretary- General Mohammed Chmaou, Esq; Ministry of Justice member Ibrahim al Hitmi; Qatar Foundation Legal Department member Abdulrahman al Qahtani, Esq; and American Bar Association Rule of Law Initiative Director Marlana Valdez, Esq.

The afternoon session will focus on ethics codes and lawyer discipline. The panel moderator will be US Corporate and Business Law Consultant Irving Kagan, Esq. The panellists will include Regulation Unit of the Ministry of Justice Hussein Jharhab and Fatima Belal, in addition to Johnson and Chmaou.
