Health insurance: What you want, what you get

THE common grouse of citizens and residents in Qatar is that when it comes to health insurance, companies don’t foot the bill in the same manner in which they exact returns from the insured.

An employee of a private company said, “When you visit a private clinic, you’re usually told this service or that medicine is not covered by the insurance, more so at a dental clinic.” He stressed the need for authorities to make it obligatory for insurance companies to provide adequate and acceptable services, including treatment of dental and eye problems.

However, Karim Saleh, director of Takaful (life and health insurance) under the Islamic Insurance Corporation, said that lack of awareness among the majority of people in the Arab world was mainly to blame for problems. “People expect the insurance company to cover all therapeutic expenses which is wrong.

Insurance is meant to help clients meet their medical expenses, not to provide all of them,” he said.
