PM reiterates support for Syrian rebels

QNA

DOHA PRIME Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs HE Sheikh Hamad bin Jassim bin Jabor al Thani said on Tuesday that Qatar backs the Syrian rebels all the way.

Talking to Al-Jazeera, the PM said, “As there is no clear international opinion to end the crisis in Syria, in fact and honestly, we are supporting the opposition with whatever it needs, even if it (the opposition) takes up arms for selfdefence.” The PM, who is also Chairman of the Arab Ministerial Committee on Syria, said that Qatar supports the call made by the UN - Arab League Envoy for Syria Lakhdar Brahimi.

“I think we know the Syrian regime’s procrastination on such initiatives, even if it accepted them, we know that it (the Syrian regime) buys time, but we support the Brahimi’s efforts”.

He also said the European Union’s soft-pedalling on Syria was only prolonging the crisis in the strife-torn country. Pointing to the rising number of daily fatalities, he said that the Syrian people were paying the price. “I am surprised at EU’s decision (of not to arm Syrian rebels). What do rebels want? They want things for self-defence. [For this reason] I think that this decision is inappropriate and will prolong the crisis, although I am confident that the crisis will end in favour of the Syrian people,” he said.
