Experts calls regular checks for men over 50

DOHA men aged 50 and above are encouraged to undergo regular health checks to Prevent prostate cancer, such as the risk of getting this cancer increases with age.

The importance of regular checkups for men in this age group was highlighted by top experts in the recent Prostate Cancer Symposium held by Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC) Department of Urology in collaboration with the American Austrian Foundation (AAF) and the European School of Urology (ESU).

Prostate cancer is one of the most common forms of cancer in men. In Qatar, are about 63 new prostate cancer patients treated to HMC annually the Department of Urology.

Prostate cancer may not show symptoms at an early stage. In addition to age, family history and race are also considered as risk factors in prostate cancer.

"The symposium is part of our efforts to raise awareness about the importance of screening for early detection of prostate cancer, as well as to update the knowledge of doctors and surgeons on the management of prostate cancer," said Dr. Khalid al Rumaihi, head of Urology at HMC.

Dr Rumaihi said that the incidence of prostate cancer in Qatar is not as high as in Europe and the United States. Prostate cancer is currently the highest number of cases of cancer of the Genitourinary tract seen on HMC.

"Ten years ago we saw more cases of bladder cancer and renal cancer in cases where the urogenital tract. Nowadays we see more cases of prostate cancer. This is partly because of our efforts to raising awareness and improving the diagnostic methods, which has led to an increase in the number of patients diagnosed at an early stage when the cancer can still be effectively treated and cured, "explained Dr. Rumaihi.

Dr. Juan Palou Redorta, Director of the European School of Urology, said now there is evidence that early detection the number of deaths from prostate cancer may decrease.

"There are various treatments established and available for treating prostate cancer. Radical prostatectomy or surgery is the main treatment offered by Urologists, who is removing the prostate gland to remove the cancer. Some Urologists can also offer brachytherapy, a form of radiotherapy where a radiation source is placed inside or next to the cancer, "said Dr. Redorta.

Men over 50 in Qatar is advised to go to their doctors or go to primary health care centre for regular health checks.
