LONDON Olympic bronze medallist Justin Gatlin scorched the Qatar Sports Club Stadium with his season’s best timing on Friday and defended his 100m title at the Doha Diamond League.

Watched by a capacity crowd, the American clocked 9.97 seconds to become the second sprinter to break under 10-second barrier this season.

The only other athlete to run faster than him in the showcase event is compatriot Tyson Gay, who timed 9.86 in Kingston Invitational last week.

Last year, Gatlin had produced a faster time of 9.87 seconds when he had beaten Asafa Powell of Jamaica to win the tag of the quickest man of the Doha Diamond League.

This latest Diamond League series opener was quite successful in terms of world leading and meet record times – seven new championship marks were rewritten and 11 world leading times were produced by athletes.
