Qatar- Japan trade up at $31bn in 2011: Seetharaman

BILATERAL trade between Japan and Qatar has increased from close to $18 billion in 2009 to $31 billion in 2011 mainly on account of increase in exports from Qatar Seetharaman, Doha Bank CEO R Seetharaman said while speaking on the topic ‘Changing Global Dynamics and Opportunities for Japan in GCC Countries’ in Tokyo on October 15.

Elaborating upon the recent major deals between Qatar and Japan, Seetharaman said, “Japanese utility Kansai Electric Power Company (KEPCO) had signed a contract with the world’s top LNG producer Qatar gas to buy 500,000 tonnes per year (tpa) of liquefied natural gas (LNG) for 15 years from January 2013. Tokyo Electric Power has signed a new contract with Qatargas to purchase 1 million tonnes per year of LNG from August 2012.

“There are more than 30 Japanese companies in Qatar such as Itochu and Nissho Iwai.

Qatargas announced in September, 2012 that it would supply Japan with 11 million tonnes more of LNG in the short term, in addition to 9 million tonnes announced last autumn.” Addressing top Japanese and Arab bankers, economists and business professionals on the occasion, Seetharaman said, “Global economy is expected to grow at 3.3 percent in 2012. Advanced economies are expected to grow at 1.3 percent for 2012. US economy is expected grow at 2.2 percent for 2012. Eurozone is expected to contract by 0.4 percent for 2012.”
