Shopping mall staff held over extortion

DOHA THE Criminal Investigation Department has arrested a number of security staff of a wellknown shopping mall in Doha for extortion.

The staff would reportedly detain some of the shoplifters and extort money from them. The investigations revealed that the accused led the shoplifters into a room for interrogation and then seized their belongings and demanded money in exchange for not reporting the theft to the police.

With permission from public prosecution, the staff were arrested through a sting operation. Files, papers and photos were found during a search of the interrogation room. Details of the shoplifters and how they bribed the security staff for being let off were also retrieved.

Officers prepared first report on the incident and referred them to the authorities.
