DOHA AROUND 300 Kenyan expatriates gathered for a community programme in Doha, on Friday. The first of its kind event was organised by the community elders.

The interactive social gathering focused on socialising and how to overcome homesickness.

Both single and married men were given tips on cultural etiquette. The men later took part in football matches at Al Ahli Sports Club.

Kenyan delicacies like Githeri were dished out in plenty on the occasion.

A Kenyan embassy representative encouraged the community members to register with the embassy in order to be eligible to vote for the Kenyan general elections in March 2013.

Speaking to Qatar Tribune, the Elder of the Kenyan Community Edwin Muzame said, “The event was organised to let the male members of the Kenyan community interact as well as share their experiences and learn from each other. Bearing in mind that some Kenyans are new in Doha, it was a good opportunity for them to learn the Qatari culture.” “Kenyans love sports.

Some of the Kenyans were new and we gave them advice on how to live away from home. We also encouraged them to respect the Qatari laws as well as appreciating the local values and culture. We provided them tips on how to deal with the culture shock,” he said.

According to Muzame the event will be held more often.

“Kenyans work in different companies and through this kind of events they can stay in touch,” he said.

John Kabucho, a Kenyan working for Al Jazeera, said, “Through this event, I was able to fight homesickness. It is encouraging to meet Kenyans away from home.” Paul Kimani, Al Jarah employee who has been in Qatar for three months, said, “This is a good way to socialize with my fellow countrymen.

At least I felt at home after attending such an interactive community event.” Martin Githieya, another Kenyan who has been in Qatar for one-and a-half months, said, “I am happy because I was able to see good facilities at the Al Ahli Sports Club.

Participating in a sporting event will keep us healthy.” Fredrick Misoi and Samuel Maina who are new to Qatar agreed that the event helped them beat homesickness.

Steve Mwatame, a Kenyan expat said that such events can make their community a close-knit family.

Kenyans Zacchaeus Njuguna, Peter Kimani and Gabriel Kimani who are members of the Kenya Red Cross Society back home, distributed first aid during the football matches.
