Nepalese celebrate Snake New Year

DOHA EXPERTISE Tamang, a Nepalese socio-cultural body, celebrated the 2849th Sonam Lho Chhar (Snake New Year) with a cultural show recently.

The event which was organised by Nepal Non- Resident Tamang Society and coordinated by Maila Waiba Tamang had Nepalese Acting Ambassador Rishi Raj Ghimire as the chief guest.

Guest singers from Nepal Jamuna Yonjan Tamang and Sagar Tamang performed in the cultural show held on the occasion.

Ghimire said that Nepal is the homeland of multicultural, multilingual, multi-ethnic and multi-religious communities with more than 120 languages and 125 ethnic groups.

Tamang people, he said, constitute one of the fifth major indigenous communities that make up six percent of the total population of Nepal.

Tamang has its own culture, custom and identity, a major attraction for tourism in the mountain region of Nepal.

The ambassador advised Nepalese workers in Qatar to respect the local law, rules and regulations. He asked them to encourage people of other nationalities to know their culture and to visit Nepal, the country of Mount Everest.

The coordinator, Maila Waiba Tamang, said the Lho Chhar has been celebrated in Qatar since 2005 to preserve and promote Tamang culture among other communities.

“The Tamang Selo is one of the famous and exciting Nepalese dances. Every year we organising Lho Chahr with the coordination of the embassy of Nepal,” Maila said.

On the occasion, the ambassador handed over a certificate of appreciation to Gulf Paradise Hotel for its continued support for the event which has been organised by Nepal Non-Resident Tamang Society of Qatar for three years.
