HUNGARY is eyeing Qatar as key partner to meet its growing energy needs.
Qatar Chamber and Hungarian Chamber of Commerce and Industry signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to strengthen economic ties, in Doha, on Sunday.
The MoU was signed by Qatar Chamber Vice- Chairman Mohammed bin Ahmed bin Towar and Hungarian Chamber of Commerce and Industry Vice-President Ferenc Millossy.
Hungary and Qatar are expected to sign a slew of agreements, including investment protection to strengthen their economic relations.
Speaking on the occasion, Millossy said: “The proposed Croatian LNG terminal can play a key role in Hungary- Qatar partnership.
Negotiations are on with Qatari and Croatian partners in this regard. We want to buy LNG from Qatar. Energy secretary of Hungry is in Qatar to hold talks with officials concerned in Qatar to import LNG through Croatian terminal”.
Hungary’s oil and gas company MOL had signed an agreement with Qatar Petroleum (QP) in 2006 for technology transfer to the latter. Hungary, which imports 80 percent of its LNG requirements from Russia, is also eyeing Qatari gas to diversify its sources.
Stressing that Hungary looks forward to working closer with Qatar in enhancing bilateral economic and trade relations, Millossy said strengthening of co-operation in the energy and related activities were of prime importance.
Hungary has offered its expertise in the areas of oil and gas technologies, biotechnology, information, communication and technology, automotive, shared services, while sought Qatar’s help in overcoming its energy needs.
Millossy said: “The governments of Hungary and Qatar are showing goodwill in laying foundation for enhanced economic relations. Hungary is aiming to extend the horizon of its economic and trade activities beyond the European continent and Qatar constitutes a significant area of cooperation both in bilateral terms and within the framework of EU-GCC ties.” Qatar, whose economy is booming, has been using latest technologies, most of which developed in Hungary.
We want to participate in the developmental activities taking place in Qatar in preparation for the Fifa World Cup in 2022. Our companies have expertise in the fields of infrastructure development. We have also expertise in sports related activities. Many Qatari sportsperson go to Hungary for training,” he said.
“Meat, livestock and poultry is another key area where Hungary is keen to develop partnership with Qatar.
Hungarian sheeps, beef, poultry and other wild animals are world famous. We are ready to meet any requirements by Qatar,” Millossy said.
