India's missile defense system is set to get a big boost if the ability to intercept enemy missiles develops fired at a distance of up to 5 km, in fact a possible threat from countries such as China.
The capacity is being developed by DRDO as part of the shield of the ballistic missile defense (BMD), of which the first phase ready for distribution possibly in Delhi.
Development of the first phase of the programme has been completed, DRDO Chief Avinash Chander BMD told PTI in an interview.
Under this, the BMD shield can catch enemy missiles fired at from address ranges up to 2,000 km.
Take this forward, the DRDO is to improve the ability of BMD in phase-II to deal with the threat of missiles of longer range of up to 5,000 km.
"We plan to soon be the first test of the phase II of the program, including we test our ability to destroy an incoming ballistic missile fired at us from 5,000 km," said Cahill, who took over from free earlier this month.
"Such a power meets our imminent threat perception," he said when asked if it would cover the threat from such missiles are fired from countries such as China.
Under the phase II of the program, the parts of such a missile defense radar and interceptor missiles would be including new and extended reach, will have the main DRDO said.
"The phase II missiles would be totally different from phase-I. In this program, you must intercept more tours and further away, "said Cahill.
He said while giving details of the program, the phase-I of the shield is ready for deploment.
Asked which city would be the first to be protected by the missile shield, he said, "the first choice for such a commitment would be the capital, New Delhi, for it is the heart of the country."
