Gharafa beats Jaish 2-0 in QSL

IKOLI VICTOR DOHA

AL GHARAFA beat El Jaish 2-0, thanks to Alex Meschini and Mark Bresciano on Sunday, earning the struggling side its first victory in four rounds of the Qatar Stars League season.

Gharafa striker Alex Meschini made up for his early misses by scoring from a pass by Diego Tardelli in the 43rd minute. The striker’s low shot from outside the box beat the full-stretched Ivanildo Rodrigus. Bresciano dashed the fighting spirit of Jaish when he struck home a cross from Fahid al Shammari in the 58th minute. Tardelli had a part to play in the second goal as well. The Brazilian was too crafty for Jaish’s Anderson Martins in inside the box and then he set up the ball for Fahid who whipped it into the box only for Bresciano to tap with his knee to make it 2-0 for Gharafa.

The result takes Gharafa to mid-table with five points while Jaish stays on fourth place with six points.

Gharafa looked a better side in the early exchanges and should have gone ahead in the 37th minute when Tardelli’s cannoned his header against the cross bar. He opened scoring chances for Bresciano and Alex but the duo’s effort especially in the first half lacked power.

After going one goal down, Jaish sought to reduce the tally in the second half and the closest it came when Adriano’s tap into the goal from close was ruled off side in the 77th minute.

Substitute Abdulqadir Ilyas added bite to the Jaish attack line, combining with Adriano and Karim Ziani. He had two goal scoring opportunities to make amends for his team but on both occasions, he lacked composure to finish off the through balls.

Abdulqadir had a free chance to score when a ball was crossed to him but he somehow headed wide with goalkeeper Qasim Burhan nowhere near him. With five minutes left in the match, the striker just needed the slightest of touch to score from sixyards but he cracked the ball above the bar instead.

On Saturday, defending champion Lekhwiya rallied to 2-2 draw against Al Wakrah in the Qatar Stars League (QSL) fourth week.

Striker Sebastian Soria scored the first goal of the match in the 20th minute.

However, Wakrah hit back with two goals from Yusuf Adam in the 32nd minute and Younis Mahmood in the 53rd minute. Despite being under pressure, Lekhwiya managed to salvage a point with Ali Hassan Afif scoring in the 69th minute.

It was a welcome draw for Lekhwiya - who was on a twomatch losing streak.

Lekhwiya was playing under its new coach Eric Gerets for the first time in the QSL.

Gerets replaced Djamale Belmadi a fortnight ago.

Wakrah, with three wins from four matches, is still unbeaten in the league.

As part of its strategy to attract fans, the QSL has recently launched various initiatives and put up attractive prizes for spectators.

How it works: The prize draw will place at each of the coming six matches and there will be 2 ticket winners per match! Each QSL round will produce 12 prize winners.

n Fans may buy tickets from Virgin Megastores in either Landmark or Villaggio, Souq Waqif or at the venue 1 hour before kick-off.

n The fan then goes to the stadium to watch their favourite team.

n When the fan arrives at the stadium – they drop their ticket stub into the prize draw box.

n During the match, 2 tickets are chosen at random.

n The two ticket winners are announced in the stadium and identified.

n The ticket winners are then invited to a weekly prize draw where the 12 prizes will be announced.

n Each week 2 of the lucky winners will win a car from AAB Toyota.

n Other prizes to be won include, ipads, playstations, banshees, mobile phones etc… n Follow the prize winners and match info on twitter and facebook. You may check the weekly winning numbers and fixtures on www.qsl.com.qa
