TRIBUNE NEWS NETWORK

DOHA THE Public Transport Company Mowasalat in an attempt to reiterate its commitment to reduce carbon footprint of Qatar has announced that it would roll out 60 new units of CNG buses this year.

The Chairman and Managing Director of Mowasalat Jassim Saif al Sulaiti has said that the decision was in line with the directive of the Emir His Highness Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa al Thani to support replacement of traditional fuels by compressed natural gas (CNG).

CNG is considered a green fuel as it considerably reduces emissions of gases that are harmful to human health and environment. CNG vehicles are also quieter compared to diesel vehicles and thus contribute to reducing noise pollution.

“The cost of CNG buses is high as it employs the most advanced technologies.

However, Mowasalat is exploring ways to reduce the cost of CNG buses to levels similar to those of ordinary buses so that a larger number of CNG-run buses could be produced for the betterment of the environment”, al Sulaiti said.

“We are making numerous efforts to ensure the success of the fight against environmental pollution and using clean energy is integral to our basic commitment in this regard. We have several plans, which aim at making environmental protection part of our daily operations”, said Mowasalat Chairman.

“As a leading company, we seek to utilise Qatar’s abundant clean energy. Mowasalat is working to establish a base for the development of CNG buses.

Besides, the next phase of our plan is to convert buses run on traditional fuels to CNG-run buses. Thus, we look forward to operating more and more CNG vehicles,” Sulaiti said.
