DOHA AHMED Jassim al Mohammadi, a Qatari student in environmental and oceanic sciences department at the Qatar University (QU) on Saturday boarded ‘Janan’ ship to conduct his graduation research.

Ahmed is the first Qatari student to use the ship, which has been at the sea for nearly one year, for research.

He started the preparation for the project two months ago and will hand over the outcome of the research in May.

Ahmed’s research will analyse hydrographic specifications, which includes temperature and salinity and amount of dissolved oxygen, in addition to the mass of the floating phytoplankton, called Chlorophyll-A along vertical section on the east coast of Qatar; during warm and cold seasons to see the seasonal changes that occur in coastal waters.

Besides, he will measure these changes according to six stations in a water section of 100 kilometres and to a depth of about 50 metres North East of Halul Island.

He had earlier undertaken two field visits onboard the vessel accompanied by a team of specialists headed by Dr Ibrahim Mohammed Ansari, the graduation project supervisor and the ship’s crew.

Ahmed said: “I chose this project for many reasons. The most important one is the lack of research of this kind in Qatari waters and the availability of necessary resources like Janan research vessel and all laboratories onboard.” The team took samples and analysed them for results on the visits that lasted two days each.

Dr Ansari, an assistant professor in the biological and environmental sciences department at Qatar University and chief scientific officer of Janan vessel, said: “We anticipate the feat that this student will achieve through the use of Janan. The ship is regarded as a rare opportunity for scientists doing research in sea and ocean sciences due to her advanced technological equipment and modern laboratories available on board.

Through this ship, we look forward to creating a generation of Qatari scientists specialised in sea and ocean study.” Director of Environmental Studies Centre Dr Mohssen Ansi Yaf’I said: “We are proud that we have this new and sophisticated vessel. We are confident that it helps widen horizons for Qatar University students who want to study sea and ocean sciences. “ It is worth mentioning that Janan was a generous donation of the Heir Apparent His Highness Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Aa Thani, who is also the chairman of QU board of Regents.
