DOHA CASES of abuse and violence against children and women in Qatar have more than trebled in the last five years, a report of the Qatar Foundation for Child and Woman Protection (Qfcwp) revealed on Saturday.

Speaking at the 3rd Annual Child Abuse and Neglect Symposium organised by the Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC), Qfcwp Research Expert Salah al Mannai said the foundation received 5,299 cases of reported violence against women and children in Qatar between October 2004 and 2012. In 2007, the number of such cases was 411, which increased to 1,349 in 2012.

At the same event, HMC Director (Paediatric Emergency Department) Dr Khalid al Ansari said the mushrooming population and greater public awareness were some of the reasons for more cases of violence against children and women reported in Qatar.

As many as 714 children and 635 women suffered abuse at the hands of family members or other community members in 2012, he added. The numbers had increased from the 364 cases of child abuse and 415 related to women, which were earlier reported in 2011.

Mannai said the cases include psychological, verbal, sexual, and physical abuses.

While many victims’ complaints were received through the centre’s hotline (919), a number of cases were reported to the foundation in person, said Mannai. He added that some other cases have been transferred to the foundation from the Public Prosecution or police security centres, other governmental authorities (ie: Family Consultation Center) or from the Qfcwp’s office at the HMC Emergency Department.
